Owner and manager, Wayland Lum’s grandparents, Eric and Mary Mydell purchased the land the farm is located on around 1931. The farm is situated on roughly 238 acres of land close to the ocean on the Eastern side of the Big Island.
Wayland’s grandparents began their farming journey as ranchers with cattle and hogs. Later they added in agricultural products such as coconuts, papayas, avocadoes, plumeria trees and many tropical flowers which were sent to the mainland for distribution through co-ops. Avocadoes were grown for the fruit and distributed to local markets, while coconut trees were grown for local landscapers.
Over the years, our crops have changed due to competition from abroad and from insects that made there way into Hawaii and destroyed some of the local agriculture. Because of the ever-changing environment and the free-flowing fresh water under our feet, we have started our most recent venture into aquaculture, while still continuing to raise and herd cattle, and other agricultural crops.
The farm has been passed down through the generations and will remain family owned and operated.

Wayland Lum
Owner & Manager
Wayland is the owner and manager of Puna AquaFarms, and a third-generation farmer/rancher. He grew up on this land and worked it with his grandparents and parents. In the beginning he learned to care for and herd the cattle and hogs that his grandparents had acquired. Then he was taught how to grow and harvest the variety of tropical plants, fruits, and foliage which were sent to a handful of customers and locations including Wall Street in Los Angeles. Today he continues to learn and grow in his newest endeavor of aquaponics from educational classes, articles, and local experts. His goal is to continue to grow the aquacultural side of the farm and create a sustainable, clean, fresh, and local US source for Tilapia.
